New faces and new stories

I've noticed so many new faces around here lately, from all over the world! One thing about me is that I love to meet new people, make new friends and chat with lovely folks. Even though our experiences might be different, I love that we can find common ground in transplant. It's the club you probably didn't want to be in, but with the best people.

Whether you're a new friend or an old one, I want to know about you! Say hi, and if you're up for it, share one thing you wish more people understood about transplant life from your unique perspective.

I'll go first: I wish more people understood how HARD transplant can be, not only physically but mentally, emotionally and relationally.

I wish people understood the amount of life adjusting has to happen. Medications, sleep schedules, pain management, diet. I wish people had a little empathy and patience with that.

They will never understand, neither they will have empathy just because we are ill or going through a process. I stopped caring about what others think, do or say.....They will never stop judging, rejecting, feeling superior, and theres no point in making our lives miserable for something we cannot control, we can decide to be at peace and drop what doesn't belong to us, but to take care of our mental health as a whole!

@Emilia I agree, I feel like others can't really understand until they've been there. No one knows what they would do in the situation of needing a transplant. Even being chronically ill in general is one of those things most people find it hard to wrap their heads around, and carries so much stigma (ableism). Coming to a place of self acceptance is one of the most important things we can do.

@TiaBean also this! it's not just the physical aspect of being sick we have to deal with. Everything in our lives changes

Most people don’t get it. My partner and siblings went through the hell I lived in (and died in twice) and they get it more than my other friends. But even with them, after over two years I am rarely asked how am I feeling. Some days it feels surreal. Their lives went on unchanged but our lives are incredibly different in every way. My priorities completely changed and I wish they could see this beautiful life from my perspective.

And this is why the support I receive here is invaluable. You all “get it” and get me.
