When did you disclose?

Hello friends, I went back to work after 4 years pre and post transplant. It is a small part time job and the agency I work for knew my work pre-transplant and they knew about my transplant. They have been accommodating with days off for doc appointments and hospital visit call outs. I am now looking for another job, maybe full time. My question is how did you determine to disclose or not to disclose your transplant and the related health challenges to a new employer? The processing of when and if seems overwhelming.

My first career post transplant was in the transplant patient support space, so me having a transplant was part of my credentials for getting the job! I still work in health and wellness spaces, and while I don’t think I’ve explicitly told anyone I work with it is all over my social media so most people find out eventually.

I don’t think I would ever not tell people, but I don’t go out of my way to make sure people know. It’s who I am, and part of how I live my life.

It’s a very good question and I often wonder what I need to say to a new employer to be able to have time off for appointments but at the same time to avoid being the topic or draw unwanted attention from colleagues as a new employee. Basically to avoid work place gossip as it will be nice to just feel as normal as possible at work

I retired before my transplant but my employer knew I was on dialysis. I had ADA accommodations at work so I was granted frequent breaks, provided a teacher aide and allowed to come in 1.5 hours late the morning after my treatment,

I didn’t tell anyone at work about my transplant and my age for last 20 years. It’s too personal for me.

fortunately, I can work 3-4 days (including weekends) per week as a veritable full-time job. So, I can have doctor’s visits during the week.
