Hey everyone, looking to speak to folks who have either had type 2 diabetes before receiving a transplant or developed type 2 diabetes post-transplant. There is an upcoming patient workshop in which your input would be greatly valued. You can leave a comment, and I'll reach out to you, or you can DM me/email me at dominika@lyfebulb.com

Thanks so much!

    Hi Dom,

I had TD2 even before I received my heart transplant in 2015. My cardiologist had tried to get me listed for a heart + kidney at the time, but my kidney function wasn't bad enough at the time.

    Thanks!

    Best,

    Sam.

    Hi Dom,

im sure I’m not the only one, but after transplant and being on Prednisone I had and do right now, have steroid induced diabetes. I was hypoglycemic since young it just wasn’t treated. I now learned a lot about controlling my bg food, hydration, and exercise. All of which makes me feel better overall. I believe many people are not fully aware and may think it is just avoiding sugar. My father in law just recently passed away, and we found out that he didn’t take his medication at all and stuck to his regular diet, which was t healthy at all.

Ugh, I am sorry to hear! I have been on prednisone for the last 14 years and recently started to have randomly low sugars which have been attributed to the long use of prednisone and the other transplant medications. Thank you for letting me know!

Hi Dom, good question. My endocrinologist called my diabetes “post transplant diabetes”. I’d never heard of that but when I looked it up, it is a real diagnosis. They tried insulin with me but my sugars kept crashing. I was on a med called Januvia but that did not help. My A1C is normal. She explained I make insulin normally but my liver does not convert glycogen into glucose effectively. I wear a CGM and watch what I eat. A lot of my issues are with low sugar, sometimes high if I eat something my body does not like. I am happy to discuss with you if you think my experience will be useful.

Did not know that post-transplant diabetes was its own thing!! Thank you for sharing this! I will find out and keep you posted!! By the way, I have recently started to have blood sugars in the 50s and so far my A1C has been good but it looks like the long-term transplant regiment is starting to take its toll

@Dom 50mg/dl is darn low. Hypoglycemia is nothing to laugh at. Are you treating it? It’s one of the trick question my endocrinologists and nurses asked me in the hospital: what’s more dangerous, hypo and hyperglycemia. Most people would think high bg, but it’s not. Unfortunately, I suffered from hypoglycemia up into my 30s, but it was never treated. It can be dangerous, my bg used to crash daily when driving, almost getting into accidents. I was on the road all day at the time.

Its only come up on some of my labs sporadically and I got tested so for now we are just keeping an eye on it. The odd thing was that this was after having consumed food! I have been asymptomatic each time as well so initially they believed it to be a fluke
